Getting started

In order to use PocketVM, you need to first install it on your mobile device as well as on your computers.

Install PocketVM on your mobile device

For your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, you need to download PocketVM from the Apple App Store.

For android devices, PocketVM will be available from the Android Marketplace.

Once you download PocketVM on your mobile device, after the quick welcome tour, you are asked to set up an account by providing an account name and a password. We recommend that the account name be your email address. The password is used for accessing your PocketVM account on each computer you use. It’s also used to protect your data on your mobile device. Please bear in mind that once the password is set up, you cannot currently change it.

Your mobile device stores all your PocketVM files, documents and Virtual Machines (VMs) and therefore we recommend a minimum of 2GB of free storage space available (for a very basic VM), but preferably 5GB or more, depending on the size of your portable VMs. Please bear in mind that you need to have installed PocketVM as well as VirtualBox on each computer that you want to run your portable VMs on.

After setting up your account, PocketVM on your mobile device is ready to connect to computers. For more information on using PocketVM on your mobile device, please read our guide here.

Installing PocketVM on your computer

You need to make sure that the desktop version of PocketVM is installed on your computers.

PocketVM for Mac OS X is available for download from here.

PocketVM for Ubuntu Linux (Unity not yet supported) is available for download from here.

PocketVM for Microsoft Windows will be available shortly.

After a quick installation procedure on your computer, you’re ready to use PocketVM. As PocketVM uses Wi-Fi to connect, please ensure that your computer and your mobile device are connected on the same network. For more information on using PocketVM on your computer, please read our guide here.

To get the most out of PocketVM, you should also ensure that VirtualBox is installed on your computers, which can be downloaded (for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux) from the VirtualBox website. For more information on using VirtualBox with PocketVM, please read our guide here.

NOTE: PocketVM is intended for IT Professionals who have experience in setting up and using Virtual Machines (under VirtualBox). If you wish to use PocketVM with VirtualBox, please be sure to consult an IT expert that can set it up for you first.
